I wanted to explain that we are about to embark on our first in-depth study and our focus will be about trees. This approach allows children to investigate and raise questions about the topic and together we will find the answers. The topics are chosen by what they can experience first-hand and are relevant to young children's everyday experiences. We desire that families get involved in the study and here are some things you can do to start:
- This week pick some leaves from a tree in your yard or take a walk and allow your child to pick their favorite trees and bring in a leaf from that tree.
- Talk about trees with your child. We will be reading many books and will discuss the roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and bark.
- We are also preparing for our first field trip, Willowbrook Farms on October 3 and 4th. Visiting this apple tree farm after exploring trees (apple trees too) will allow the children to dig deeper in their understanding.
- I may need your help by bringing in supplies that will allow the children to investigate and explore in a tangible way. For example, bring in your favorite type of apple or fill a baggie with some seeds from food you eat.
